Home Opener: Muskies Black vs Sturgeon Thunder
Muskies fans were in for a show when the Atom Black team opened their doors to the Sturgeon Lake Thunder on Friday Oct.19th, tieing their first home game of the season, 3-3!
Early in the first period, Sturgeon gave the Muskies their first opportunity of the game after a tripping call only 3 minutes in, but unfortunately for the Atom Black team, the Thunder was flawless on the penalty kill. Returning to even strength, and after some great back-checking effort from Devon Moynes #8 and Drake Robinson-West #9, the Muskies lit up the score board with 2 really fast back-to-back goals, mere seconds apart, from Isaac Stuckey #15 and another from Corbin Allison #4 on the rebound! Only one minute later, with solid assistance from defenceman Andrew Shows #7, the Atom Black team sunk a 3rd one in behind the Sturgeon netminder and the 1st period ended in the Muskies favor, 3-0.
Despite an immense amount of pressure from forward Graham Thompson #3, and the defensive efforts to close the middle from Muskies Chase Boutin # 6 & Isabella Stuckey #12, the 2nd period told a different story. Another tripping whistle blown against the Thunder sent the Muskies out on the power play, but somehow Sturgeon was able to manage their first goal of the game, shorthanded. That was just the motivation that they needed as the Thunder roared in the 3rd period, with a 5-hole shot at the 5 minute mark, narrowing the score. the Muskies were looking for an easy bounce after that, but couldn't get ahead, and with another shot from the Sturgeon team with only a minute left to go, they ended the 3rd period with a final 3-3 score.
